Eight months (and two Kite Man issues) later, she said yes. From then on, it was a wild ride for Batcat shippers. DC’s marketing cut no corners to promote the upcoming wedding. It was mainstream headline news. There were prestige wedding albums, Batfamily tie-ins, and dozens of exclusive variant covers. Batman #50 was going to be the biggest event in DC history… And then New York Times spoiled that it wouldn’t happen in an article published three days before the issue came out. People were outraged. DC’s own writers didn’t even see it coming. Tom King received death threats, as did Joëlle Jones, despite having little to do with the wedding outcome herself. It was a PR disaster all around. "Fuck Batman" At San Diego Comic-Con 2018, fans finally got their first look at Titans, the big draw of of DC’s new streaming service and the flagship show that would kick off a whole new slate of original DC television content. The trailer was not received well, to say the least. Every scene was overwhelmingly dark, and saturated with angst and violence. Heroes were shown mutilating and murdering people in gruesome ways. Even the title shot seemed amateurly made. The whole ordeal could be summarized by a scene of Robin seemingly breaking necks and shooting thugs in an alleyway, and then turning to the camera to say, “Fuck Batman”. Even more shocking was how quickly public opinion turned around once the show actually premiered. Many of the scenes in the trailer turned out to be misleading and poorly edited. Critics wrote that the first few episodes had shown a lot of promise, and only got better as the show continued on. Robin was broody but lovable. Starfire was mysterious and intriguing. And guest appearances like the Doom Patrol, Donna Troy, and Jason Todd teased a diverse and colorful superhero world. Even the “Fuck Batman” line wasn’t so bad in its actual context. A common phrase you’ll find regarding the discussion of the show was “I thought I would hate it but…” The Damned Bat-Dick Black Label was going to be huge for DC. Following in the footsteps of cherished works like The Dark Knight Returns, DC: The New Frontier, and Kingdom Come, the books printed under Black Label were promised as mature, unfiltered stories coming straight from the minds of DC’s biggest names. And with Brian Azzarello penning the first issue to be published under the label, there was sure to be plenty of spicy controversy. Well, there certainly was a lot of discussion, but not in the way DC expected. There was plenty of buzz surrounding the issue, but not about the story’s gritty nature, or cynical outlook, or even the final shot of a murder victim nailed on a cross that was sure to bait outrage. Rather, the only thing anyone talked about was a a shadowy silhouette of Batman’s penis. Batman: Damned became a punchline on late night talk shows, and spawned more dick jokes than a Nightwing fanfic. As a result, DC higher-ups demanded that digital and future collections have the penis completed obscured, and that Black Label be subject to closer editorial scrutiny, putting the whole line at risk. Fastest Man Alive No Longer Everyone knew Roy Harper was going to die. With Heroes in Crisis being billed as a spiritual successor to the infamous Identity Crisis, someone was going to be the sacrificial lamb, and all the signs pointed to Roy. His heartwarming reunion with Ollie, his lack of presence in other books, and even the book’s own marketing spelled Roy’s death in black and white letters. And so when Heroes in Crisis revealed Roy’s slumped corpse, no one was surprised. What did shock people, however, was the body next to him: Wally West, formerly the Fastest Man Alive. It was disheartening to see the harbinger of Rebirth (and all that themes that it represented, like love and hope) callously killed off, and without even a confessional or any build-up, as if he were an afterthought. Who the hell is Ric Grayson? In Batman #55 (written by Tom King), the lovable Nightwing got shot in the head. While King had originally intended for the aftermath to be short and contained in his own book, it nevertheless became a major status quo shift, derailing planned storylines in Dick Grayson’s own books. The new status quo saw Grayson suffering from amnesia, pushing away his friends and family, and (for some inexplicable reason) going by the name “Ric”. In Dan Abnett’s Titans, the team that was handpicked by Nightwing suddenly had no leader, and Abnett spent the next few issues bemoaning through the fourth wall about the book’s sudden aimless direction. In Nightwing, things were even more confusing. Despite hyping up the status quo change as a monumental event, writer Benjamin Percy departed suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving the book in the hands of Scott Lobdell, a writer widely disliked for both his prior work and his history of sexual harassment. Best r/DCcomics Subreddit Post For the best submission posted on r/DCcomics in 2018 Scott Snyder's Happy Hour AMA Dick Grayson/Vicki Vale is the best new ship DC's tribute to Stan Lee Best r/DCcomics Discord Moment For the most memorable moment to occur in the r/DCcomics Discord server in 2018 /u/dmull387 locks #general; /u/GrayGhostt doesn’t notice To break up a heated argument in #general, /u/dmull387 locked the channel in order to reprimand the rulebreaking parties. Before he could, however, his phone died, leaving the chat locked for an extended amount of time to all users... except other mods. Oblivious to the fact that no one was responding, /u/GrayGhostt continued to engage in the debate, typing out several long paragraphs before /u/dmull387 was able to return and finally unlock the chat. Fake Heroes in Crisis “leak” goes viral In the spirit of several other prior 4chan leaks, someone in the server decided to make up their own set of fake rumors and post them to /co/. Among the comical fictions was a storyline in Heroes in Crisis in which Nightwing and Starfire would have sex at Roy Harper's funeral, resulting in Starfire's pregnancy. This part in particular went viral on Twitter and Tumblr, spawning numerous memes ("Kory get the strap") and even fan art. Excited shippers even visited the Discord to ask if others knew whether or not they were real. /u/daelito gets bullied over an anime ship /u/GrayGhostt, /u/TheStealthBox, and /u/dalelito are fond of discussing anime on the server. At one point, the discussion turned to Nisekoi, in which /u/GrayGhostt and /u/TheStealthBox proceeded to trash /u/dalelito 's favorite ship, to the point where he left the server for about five minutes before coming back. Server becomes Sonic the Hedgehog themed On April Fool's Day, the mods had a last-minute idea for a Discord prank. They re-purposed the entire server (along with its 20-something channels) to be a Sonic the Hedgehog server, aptly titled " r/dcsanic ". The server icon was changed to that of a Batgirl-hedgehog hybrid monstrosity, and each channel was renamed to include something related to Sonic or furries. And for the cherry on top, the server event was advertised on the sub as "Speedster Sunday", much to the dismay of Flash fans. r/DCcomics Meme of the Year For the best meme, joke, or running gag seen on r/DCcomics Bendis and King are the worst Explanation: Tom King and Brian Michael Bendis are writing Batman and Superman, respectively, and both writers have taken some creative liberties with the properties that have proven to be very divisive with fans, often breaking familiar status quos and inserting drama in place of family relationships. The hatedom for these two writers has been very vocal, to the point where they’re frequently blamed for anything that has gone wrong in matters that they have no hand in, based purely on spite and speculation. Brian Michael Bendis killed your dog, and Tom King stole your girlfriend. DickBabs vs DickFire Explanation: There is quite the passive-aggressive ship war between the Dick Grayson/Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson/Starfire fandoms. Whenever fan art of one ship is posted to the sub, someone on the other side posts fan art of their ship to counter it. Sometimes, it escalates to a series of lengthy back-and-forth essays written with the seriousness of a political debate, albeit with more civility. FUCK BATMAN Explanation: During the infamous San Diego Comic Con trailer, Robin seemingly kills a handful of thugs in brutal fashion, turns to the camera, and growls “Fuck Batman”. Naturally, the line got repeated and parodied all over the subreddit, often used whenever Batman behaved like a jerk in comics. Telosposting Explanation: Telos was a highly forgettable villain from the abysmal filler event Convergence and yet somehow got his own mini-series. For some reason, his name has been cropping up more frequently, often in posts about users’ favorite characters, usually to annoy the r/DCcomics moderators.
